Sept. 26, 2008Top-Ranked Eagles, Miners Roll Past FoesThe top-two ranked teams in the foothillpreps.com’s frosh football rankings made it look easy Thursday night with a pair of lopsided non-conference wins. In Loomis, the No. 1 Golden Eagles from Del Oro built a 26-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 32-6 victory over Enochs of Modesto. Meanwhile, in Grass Valley, Nevada Union, No. 2 in the poll behind Del Oro, showed no mercy in blasting Caesar Chavez of Stockton, 65-22. Elsewhere, Bear River improved to 3-0 with a win over Woodcreek, 23-12; Colfax blanked Union Mine, 28-0 and Casa Roble topped Placer, 33-6. Here’s a rundown of Thursday’s action: Del Oro 32 Enochs 6 - Tanner Huber rushed for three touchdowns and Jake Jackson recorded three quarterback sacks and a pass interception along with adding another score as the Golden Eagles romped. Tyler Johnson also scored for the Golden Eagles (3-0) when he fell on an Enochs fumble in the end zone. Huber, Johnson and Nick O’Sullivan keyed the Eagles defense which built a 26-0 lead at halftime. Nevada Union 65, Cesar Chavez 22 - Gabe Humphers ran the opening kick-off back 85 yards for a touchdown to start a scoring onslaught that set a new freshman record at NU for points in a game. NU, which led 30-0 after a quarter, held a 51-6 lead at halftime as Brad Spangler ran 19 yards for another score; Humpers added a 30-yard tally and quarterback Josiah Paye ran in a 19-yard bootleg and connected with tight end Glenn Fuller for another touchdown from 14-yards out. Garrett Strohm also added a five-yard scoring run while Tyler Bergh took a counter in from 15 yards out. Colfax 28 Union Mine 0 - Austin Young, Sam Quinlan, Shawn Rawlins and Nolan Karbowski all scored on touchdown runs for the Falcons who went on the road and improved to 2-1 with the win over the previously undefeated Diamondbacks.. Zac Coffman added a pass interception and 50-yard return to set up one Colfax score. Hunter Owens and Roger Lillie also had strong games for the Falcons who led at halftime, 13-0. Bear River 23 Woodcreek 12 – Jim Bamberg and John Casere both rushed for Bruins touchdowns and Brandon Wooner stripped a Woodcreek runner and returned the recovered fumble for another score as the Bruins improved to 3-0 on the season. Bear River, which led 16-0 at halftime, also received a strong defensive outing from Dillon Huffman. Bear River plays at Colfax next Thursday in the Pioneer Valley League opener. Casa Roble 33 Placer 6 – The injury-riddled Hillmen started slow and couldn’t make up any ground on the visiting Rams in the non-league loss. “We had a couple of key injuries that really hurt us but Casa did a good job,” said Placer coach Jim Gray. The Hillmen, whose lone score came on a run from Johnny Foley, also received strong play on both sides of the ball from Casey Sabins. Jordan Walls, quarterback D.J. Rodriguez and David Daniels also drew Gray’s praise for good efforts. |
