Weimar Hills Girls Take NCAL 7th Grade Title

Playing their best basketball at the most opportune time of the season, the Weimar Hills Lady Warriors 7th grade girls basketball team completed a stretch run that paid off in dividends Friday night.

Playing in the Nevada County Athletic League’s post-season tournament at Nevada Union High, the Lady Warriors, the league’s No. 3 seed, upended Lyman Gilmore of Grass Valley, 23-17, in Friday’s finals to bring home the tournament championship.

Led by Reagan Lillie and Madison Ittner who scored eight points apiece, the Lady Warriors overcame the loss of leading scorer Kylie Kirkland to injury to pull off the tourney win.

“The girls did just a great job of banding together for the win,” said Weimar Hills coach Jill Kirkland. “We had to overcome a couple of injuries but the girls played hard the whole way.”

In the win over Gilmore, the Lady Warriors were dealing with an equally hot Gilmore team that had upset regular season champion Union Hill in Thursday’s semi-finals.

“Lyman Gilmore did a great job too,” said Kirkland. “They might have been emotionally spent after their win over Union Hill but our girls were focused and did a fine job.”

Weimar’s 7th graders defeated Magnolia, 28-23, in the semi-finals as Lillie tallied eight points and Kylie Kirkland andf Ittner chipped in with six points each.

On the season, the Lady Warriors posted a record of 14-3.
