Weimar Hills grabs NCAL 8th grade girls tourney The Weimar Hills 8th grade girls basketball team saved its best for last this season. The Lady Warriors, seeded in the No. 3 position for last week’s post season Nevada County Athletic League tournament, rose up and played its best basketball of the year at the right time. Parlaying three outstanding efforts together, Weimar Hills capped off a furious run to the NCAL tournament championship by handing Forest Lake Christian a 36-25 defeat in last Saturday’s championship game played at Bear River. Coach Marge Sigenfuse’s Lady Warriors received a balanced scoring effort and an outstanding team defensive effort in the title game triumph. High scorers for the winners included Sara Davidson with 12 points, Iona Lofrano with 11 and Mariah Turcotte with nine. Sigenfuse also praised the defensive efforts of Hailey Biles as being a vital part of the win. “It was a total team effort,” said Sigenfuse about the Lady Warriors performance. “The girls really were focused in this tournament.” Weimar Hills had advanced to the championship tilt by handing No. 2 seeded Magnolia a 35-32 setback in Thursday’s semi-finals. The Lady Warriors grabbed an early lead, maintained it throughout the contest and then staved off a late rally try by the Rattlers. Davidson continued her fine play in the tournament by sinking 12 points while Lofrano contributed 11. No. 1 seeded Seven Hills had a bye to open the tournament but was upset by No. 5 seeded Forest Lake in Thursday’s semi-finals. |
